A Brilliant Idea
Mookie The Beagle™, his black, white, and tan fur still a bit fluffed from a refreshing morning bath, sniffed eagerly around his cozy kitchen. The checkered floor gleamed under hanging copper pots, and the air already hinted at sweet adventures.
He had a brilliant idea: baking cookies for the upcoming school fair! His brown eyes gleamed as he called his neighborhood friends: Maggie the cute fluffy white Havanese, Ozzie the bouncy cheery goldendoodle, and Frankie, the fawn and black feisty pug. They arrived with aprons on and excited giggles.
Money Map
“Baking sounds yummy, Mookie, but how do we make sure we don’t spend too much?” asked little Maggie, wiping the flour on her paws on Mookie’s apron.
“We need a budget!” Mookie woofed enthusiastically, his floppy ears swaying as he fetched a large chalkboard from the corner.
“A budget is like a map for your money—it plans how much you can spend so you don’t run out and end up with no cookies or no profit.”
He chalked up a list of ingredients and costs: flour for $2, sugar for $1, and gooey chocolate chips for $3.
“Total expenses (money out): $6,” Mookie calculated, his tan snout wrinkling as he double-checked.
“Now, we plan to bake 30 cookies and sell them for 50 cents each at the fair. That’s potential revenue (money in) of $15 if we sell them all to the neighborhood kidz.
Our budget says we spend $6 to make $15, leaving $9 profit—but only if we stick to the plan!”
School Fair
The kitchen buzzed with activity: measuring, mixing, and baking. The sweet aroma of chocolate chip cookies wafted through the house, drawing in curious neighborhood noses.
At the school fair, under colorful banners and amid games and laughter, they set up a booth with a sign saying “Mookie’s Cookies – 50¢ Each!”
Customers lined up—teachers, parents, and kidz—and soon all 30 cookies were sold.
Back home, they reviewed the budget on the chalkboard.
“We spent (money out) exactly $6. We earned (money in) $15. So profit is $9,” Mookie explained.
“If we’d gone over budget, say by buying extra fancy sprinkles, our profit would shrink.
Sweet Business
Budgets help us make smart choices, like saving for better ingredients next time.” Maggie, Ozzie, and Frankie nodded, as they munched on the last few crumbs left.
“A budget keeps us on track and makes business sweet!” Mookie barked, already dreaming of the next bake sale.
